Mehmet Cahit Turhan said the economic loss due to death, injury and financial damage in traffic accidents only in 2008 in Turkey reached around TL14 million. He pointed out the number of fatal accidents in Turkey is twofold of the ones in Spain and 8-fold of the ones in Norway. Stating their organization incessantly carry on vertical and horizontal signposting in order to maintain road safety in the area they are responsible for, Turhan emphasized the necessity to extend the use of smart transport systems to prevent loss of lives and finance in traffic. Turhan expressed they aim to raise the standards of traffic supervision by extending traffic management system application to whole highway network in the upcoming years.

MR. KADİR TOPBAŞ RECEIVES AWARD FOR HIS

CONTRIBUTION TO PUBLIC TRANSPORT PROJECTS…

Following the opening remarks at the ceremony of  Intertraffic Istanbul Fair, Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was presented a plate for his contributions to the public transport and significant support to Metrobüs, a distinctive project, at the award ceremony organized within the context of public transport by Intertraffic Scientific Events Committee. Muzaffer Hacımustafaoğlu, Deputy Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality accepted the plate on behalf of Kadir Topbaş.

Hacımustafaoğlu said the population of Istanbul is estimated as 12.5 million, this corresponds to 23 million acts of transportation daily. 11 million of it commute by vehicles, while the rest is constituted by pedestrians. Hacımustafaoğlu was quoted as saying: “We work hard to satisfy the residents and rapidly accessible transport mechanisms are needed to achieve this. We believe we, as Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, have made great progress in this respect.”

According to number of vehicles passing through Boğaziçi (Bosphorus) Bridge in March and April 2009, approximately 5.000.000 passengers were transported between two sides. On a daily average in two sides this corresponds to 165.000 passengers. Number of vehicles passing through Boğaziçi (Bosphorus) Bridge in a day has been decreased by around 7000 vehicles. This reveals the Metrobüs project has had a much greater effect on traffic than a new way to be built for private automobiles would have.
